Curious how much weed you can legally buy at once at a dispensary in New Jersey? State law limits the amount you can purchase in a single transaction. Here’s what you need to know about how much recreational marijuana you can buy at once.
Here’s how much cannabis you can buy on each trip
Just because weed is legal doesn’t make your dispensary trip a free-for-all. New Jersey sets a limit of one ounce of cannabis flower per transaction or the one-ounce equivalent in other cannabis products.
It’s not exactly a straightforward measuring system, so let’s break it down. (And if you lose track, don’t worry — our budtenders will guide you and tell you if you hit the legal limit.)
Flower and preroll purchase limits
Adults 21 or older in New Jersey may buy up to 1 ounce (28.35 grams) of cannabis flower or prerolls in a single shopping trip.
Not sure how much that is? Most people visiting dispensaries like to buy 3.5 grams of flower, or “eighths” as they’re known because they’re one-eighth of an ounce. Most prerolls are around 0.5 grams or 1 gram. That means you can buy around 28 1-gram joints or around 56 0.5-gram joints in one trip.
All in all, for most cannabis consumers, an ounce would last for a month or more.
Edibles and topical purchase limits
Measuring your legal limit of edibles can be confusing because there are two limits to be aware of:
- The purchase limit, which is up to 1,000mg of THC in edibles per transaction
- The potency limit, which is 100mg of THC per package
Most edibles in New Jersey are sold in 100mg packages. The dose per piece or serving can vary depending on the brand — some packages have 10 10mg servings, while others have 20 5mg servings, and so on. How long your edibles last depends on how frequently you consume them and how much you take at a time.
Topicals and tinctures can also be confusing to navigate because they’re measured by cannabinoid content. The total cannabinoid content is measured and applied to your limit. But since topicals and tinctures are typically measured in milligrams instead of grams, you can buy more at once.
If you have a CBD lotion with 500 mg CBD and 500 mg THC, you have 1,000 mg of cannabinoids or 1 gram. That 1 gram is subtracted from your legal purchase limit of 28 grams. You can see how you’re able to stretch your budget based on the types of products you’re purchasing.
Vapes and concentrates purchase limits
New Jersey limits oil and concentrate purchases to 4 grams per transaction.
“Concentrates” include a wide category of products, some of which require heat to activate and some that do not. Live resin, sugar, badder, shatter, and Rick Simpson Oil (RSO) are some examples of concentrates. These products are measured the same way as flower but are often sold in 1-gram quantities. You can purchase four grams of concentrate in total per shopping trip.
Generally, concentrates tend to be more expensive than flower, but they can last longer due to how potent they are. You’ll need much less concentrate than you would flower to feel the same, if not more intense, effects. If you regularly dab concentrates, you may need to re-up more frequently than someone who reserves concentrates for the weekend.
A standard vape cartridge contains 0.5 g or 1 g of oil, but 2 g carts are now available for purchase in New Jersey as well. If you buy 1g vape carts, you can buy 4 at once, while you can only purchase two vape carts at a time if they’re 2 g each.
Are purchase limits different for New Jersey medical cannabis patients?
Yes, medical limits are different from recreational cannabis. Medical cannabis card holders in New Jersey (or their designated caregivers) can purchase up to 3 ounces (84 grams) of medicine in 30 days. Terminally ill patients have no limit. This only applies to medical cardholders or caregivers shopping at medical cannabis dispensaries.

How do I know if I’m buying more than the limit?
You can do the math on how much weed you’re buying at once, or you can do it the easy way and ask one of our budtenders to give you an update as you’re shopping. New Jersey requires dispensaries to track each product sold, so it’s easy to get your total while you’re checking out.
How much cannabis can you possess at a time in New Jersey?
New Jersey allows you to have up to six ounces of cannabis flower or the equivalent in cannabis products on your person at any time.
Where can you consume cannabis in New Jersey?
New Jersey has limits on where you are and aren’t allowed to smoke (or otherwise consume) your weed.
You are only allowed to eat, smoke, or vape cannabis in two places: private property or dispensaries licensed for onsite consumption. This means you can consume at your house or a friend’s house, as long as it doesn’t violate your lease or HOA rules. Renters be warned: property owners have the right to restrict or refuse smoking.
You cannot consume cannabis on any federal land or property or smoke in public spaces where smoking of any kind is banned.
Can I be arrested for carrying more weed than the New Jersey legal limit?
Technically, yes. If you’re caught with more than six ounces of cannabis, it can still carry a criminal charge or a financial penalty. Whether you are arrested is up to the discretion of the law enforcement officer and the charges you face are up to the court. We recommend that you follow the law and you don’t carry more than six ounces at once in public.
