Boone Town Provisions' Cannabis Flower Buying Guide
Whether you’re just starting your cannabis journey or you’re a seasoned pro, we at Boone Town Provisions are here to guide you through these green pastures. Start with cannabis flower, the classic way the plant has been consumed for thousands of years.
What is cannabis flower?
Cannabis flower, often simply referred to as “bud” or “weed,” is the harvested and dried flowering portion of the female cannabis plant. It contains various compounds, most notably cannabinoids like tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD). Nearly all cannabis flower in a dispensary has more THC than CBD or other cannabinoids. You may hear this called any number of names — ganja, marijuana, pot, or something else. At Boone Town Provisions and many other New Jersey dispensaries, it’s simply called “flower.”
Cannabis flower is often consumed for its heady effects. You may want to feel fully relaxed, giggly, or happy, like you just spent a day in the sunshine. You may want to feel hungry or enjoy sensations like eating on a whole new level. You may want to try flower to help calm your mind and sweep stress away. Whatever your aim, there are plenty of ways to try flower, including smoking joints, accessories like bowls or bongs, or vaporizing with a discreet handheld device. And for the more adventurous among us, you can even try to make your own edibles or infused lotions with cannabis flower.
How many types of cannabis flower are there?
There are hundreds of cannabis strains, also called cultivars or varietals, out there. Each one has its own unique name and brings its own experience to the table.
Some have names that are reminiscent of their scent, like Blueberry or Strawberries and Cream. Others are named in honor of the experience you may have, like the Skywalker OG strain that just might send you into a new galaxy. Others yet have names that derive from their parent strains in the case of a hybrid; the “family” of cannabis they come from, like Kush; or they’re named in honor of someone or something the cultivator really loves.
If a name sounds appealing to you — great! We encourage you to try it out. But there’s much more to cannabis than just its name. The name is just the beginning of the adventure.
Indica, sativa, and hybrid
Cannabis flower is commonly categorized into three main “types:” indica, sativa, and hybrid. Indica strains are typically associated with their relaxing and sedating effects, while sativa strains are linked to more energizing, uplifting, creative, and focused effects. Hybrids are said to be somewhere in the middle. The vast majority of strains you see in the dispensary are hybrids.
However, in reality, you can’t judge a book by its cover. The indica, sativa, and hybrid designations are old designations from the Prohibition era that have made their way to the dispensary menu. You can have an energizing experience from an indica and vice-versa. It’s important to note that these categories serve as general guidelines, and the effects can vary significantly based on factors such as cannabinoid and terpene content.

How cannabis flower is tested in New Jersey
Mandated by law, 0.5% of each cannabis batch in New Jersey must go under rigorous testing by a third-party laboratory, with results made accessible to the public. Tests cover essential parameters such as cannabinoid profiling, detection of foreign materials, contaminants, mycotoxins, heavy metals, and pesticides.
Licensed cultivators, manufacturers, and dispensaries must submit a Certificate of Analysis (CoA) to the state, with dispensaries required to keep this information on file for customer reference. Packaging labels also must display the cannabinoid profiles of each product to ensure transparency and consumer confidence.
How to store cannabis flower at home
Proper storage is critical to keeping your cannabis flower fresh and potent. While most products come with harvest and “best buy” dates, ensuring freshness goes beyond those labels. To extend the shelf life of your cannabis flower (which can be up to a year after purchase), store it in a tinted, air-tight container. Find a cool, dry spot, aiming for temperatures under 70°F and humidity below 63%. You can also include a “freshness pack” from brands like Boveda to manage moisture levels and maintain peak potency.
